ARS Technology in Action: Enabling the UK’s First Space Acoustic Tests for ESA’s Ariel Mission
At ARS, we take pride in the capability and impact of our cutting-edge acoustic devices, which have recently played a vital role in the UK’s first Direct Field Acoustic Noise (DFAN) tests conducted at the National Satellite Test Facility (NSTF) for ESA’s Ariel mission.
Operated by RAL Space and officially opening in May 2024, the NSTF represents a leap forward in testing capabilities for large-scale spacecraft. With the ability to accommodate payloads up to 7 tons, the facility features specialized areas for shaking satellites to replicate the intense conditions experienced during launch and for chamber testing in extreme temperatures.
The recent DFAN tests focused on the engineering qualification model of the telescope baffle for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Ariel mission, which aims to study the chemistry of approximately 1000 planets outside our solar system. This innovative project underscores the UK’s pivotal role in advancing space exploration. The NSTF’s Dynamics Suite, equipped with 48 powerful acoustic devices and amplifiers—devices supplied by ARS—is integral to ensuring the structural integrity of components under extreme acoustic conditions.
The successful completion of these acoustic tests signifies a new frontier for RAL Space and the UK space sector, paving the way for future missions. As Dr. Ian Horsfall, Dynamics Group Leader at RAL Space, noted, “This achievement is a significant step forward for the NSTF and will benefit many future missions.”
At ARS, we are proud that our technology is aiding RAL Space in their pioneering efforts, and we remain committed to supporting the UK’s advancements in space exploration.
